:: RENOVATION 1965-1980
In September 1965, the Lawrence-Douglas County Mental Health Center once again became the Bert Nash Mental Health Center, making the center "more personal" to the people in the community. The word "community" was added in February 1970 when the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center incorporated as a non-profit organization to lay the groundwork for new funding alternatives.
The Center staff at this time was relatively small until late 1970 when additional part-time staff was hired. In addition to the half-time Center psychiatrist, (who also practiced privately in the Lawrence community) and the full-time social worker, the Center employed a half-time clinical psychologist, a consulting child psychiatrist, and a group therapy consultant.
In 1971, the Center was awarded a $16,700 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to initiate a cooperative program with the Douglas County Juvenile Court. This program was designed to “Develop and provide services to adolescents and their parents referred by the juvenile court for services.” Another goal of the program was to facilitate new services for children and develop a parent education program.
