:: RESILIENCY 1980-1999 continued

Another innovative program, the Therapeutic Classroom, a cooperative program with USD 497 was established in 1988. The Therapeutic Classroom provides an alternative to the traditional classroom setting for students with severe emotional problems. The classroom is staffed by a teacher, a paraprofessional, and a therapist, and provides more structure than is available within a public school setting.

The 1990s were a time of tremendous change in health care services in the state and the country. As managed care was becoming the preferred delivery system for health services, privatization of health care services was increasing and there was a growing interest in integrating primary and behavioral health care. The Bert Nash Center faced these challenges by making necessary operational changes and continuing to focus on providing excellent care to its clients.

In 1995, the City of Lawrence and Douglas County Commissioners voted to construct a new facility that would co-locate four major healthcare institutions: the Bert Nash Center, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice Care on the Lawrence Memorial Campus. In 1999, the Bert Nash Center moved into the Community Health Facility at 200 Maine Street.

In 1997 the Center initiated the WRAP program (Working to Recognize Alternative Possibilities) to meet the growing needs of students in the Douglas County school system. The program was designed to improve child development and learning, increase connectivity to the broader community, and provide resiliency, wellness and mental health support within the school.
