Adult Services

Our experienced staff helps adults with a variety of concerns related to the stress associated with family, relationships, work, illness or the loss of a loved one. Stress in adults can be expressed as somatic complaints such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, eating disorders or alcohol and substance abuse. We offer a variety of helping strategies based on individual needs including individual, couple, group and family therapy, psychological evaluations and appropriate medications.

Intensive outpatient services are offered through Community Support Services (CSS) to assist adults with recurrent mental health disorders to live independently and productively within our community. Specialized programming through CSS includes supported employment and housing opportunities that promote self-sufficiency and independence through practical work, living and social experiences.

Our team of aging specialists provides an array of services to older adults and their families. Educational programs, home visits and our on-site clinics at Babcock Place in Lawrence, Pinecrest Apartments in Eudora and the Community Building in Lecompton bring information and services to the natural settings in which older citizens live.

Child and Family Services

Our experienced staff helps children and families with the stress related to family relationships, the challenges of parenting, blending families, the impact of divorce or making ends meet. Stress in children can manifest as chronic conflict with parents or siblings, failing grades, poor peer choices, drug use, trouble with the law or somatic complaints. A variety of helping strategies, often provided in the home or other natural settings and based on an individual child's and family's needs, are used. These include individual, couple, group and family therapy, parent support groups, psychological evaluations and medications.

Specialized programming for children and families includes:

  • Working to Recognize Alternative Possibilities (WRAP) places mental health professionals from the Bert Nash Center on-site in targeted schools in Baldwin City, Eudora and Lawrence school districts to help youth have successful school experiences.

  • Youth Employment and Supportive Services (YESS!) is a community-based program promoting healthy development of youth and their families through mentoring relationships and job opportunities for youth.

  • Divorce Adjustment Program is provided in cooperation with the Douglas County Courts to help parents and children cope with changing families.

  • Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is a comprehensive service for troubled youth. Youth are referred into this program by the Douglas County District Attorney's office, Juvenile Court Judge, Douglas County Youth Services, Court Services officers and/or Juvenile Intake. MST focuses on healthy development of youth and strives to: (1) reduce youth criminal activity; (2) reduce other types of harmful behaviors such as drug abuse; and (3) decrease rates of imprisonment and out-of-home placement. MST improves how youth function at home, school and in their neighborhoods by providing family-focused services in the community.

  • Summer Programs are provided for youth in conjunction with the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department.

Prevention, Education and Outreach

Our services include education, consultation and outreach services to promote wellness and early detection of mental health concerns warranting professional help. Presentations on a variety of mental health topics can be arranged through the Community Development Office by calling (785) 843-9192 or sending e-mail to smcmichael@bertnash.org.
