Medications to treat Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder (MAUD & MOUD) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a “whole patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD).
MAUD/MOUD is primarily used for the treatment of opioid and alcohol use disorders to normalize brain chemistry, reduce physiological cravings, normalize body functions without the negative and euphoric effects of the substance used.
• This treatment can be short- or long-term treatment and is safe to use for months, years, or even a lifetime. The longer the treatment, the better the health outcomes.
• Methadone and buprenorphine prevent withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Naltrexone prevents cravings. By having physiological symptoms controlled, people can better focus on psychological and social issues associated with substance use disorder.
• Medications used for MAUD/MOUD are the gold standard of care. Methadone and buprenorphine are the first line treatment for pregnant women with opioid use disorder.
• MAUD/MOUD is commonly used for the treatment of opioid use disorders and alcohol use disorder.
• MAUD/MOUD may help reduce cravings and prevent withdrawal symptoms.
• Medications are available in a variety of forms including tablets, liquids, and injections.
• MAUD/MOUD has been shown to increase an individual’s ability to maintain a job. MAT may also increase the chances of staying in treatment.
