When teaching movement as medicine, Mari Mahinay tells class members there is no time like the present. Bert Nash CEO David Johnson received a proclamation at Tuesday night’s City Commission meeting proclaiming May as Mental Health Month. Douglas County commissioners will also issue a Mental Health Month proclamation. Johnson thanked the city and the county for their support of Bert Nash and promoting good mental health. A ribbon cutting for the opening of the new Outside for a Better Inside nature trail was held Friday, May 2. Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center will donate the property to the city for the new Sandra Shaw Community Health Park. The park, north of the mental health center, will be named for the late Bert Nash CEO. Shaw was executive director of the Bert Nash Center from 1979 until her retirement in 2001. She died in 2010, but her legacy lives on through the work of the C

Connie Snow and Sharon Zehr are recipients of the 2014 Sandra Shaw Spirit Award. The awards were announced during an all-staff meeting March 31. The Spirit Award, which recognizes a Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center staff member for outstanding work and dedication, is named for the late Bert Nash CEO Sandra Shaw. The award is the highest honor a Bert Nash employee can receive. Snow is accounts/receivable manager; Zehr is leader of the homeless outreach and jail teams.

Robbie Brewster likes painting for other people. But it does him good, too. “When you’re done and you see what you painted, it makes you happy,” he said. Brewster, who has bipolar disorder, started painting a few months ago in art therapy classes at Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. “He really got into painting,” said Elizabeth Dunlap, who has been Brewster’s case manager for the past two years. “He would be considered a beginning painter, but I think it’s pretty impr
